“Social media spark a revelation that we, the people, have a voice, and through the democratization of content and ideas we can once again unite around common passions, inspire movements, and ignite change.” ― Brian Solis, Engage: The Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web
Social media allows Internet citizens to interact, share files, and collaborate through online communication. Some examples of social networking sites are Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and many more (What is Social Media, n.d). In this article, Omidyar discussed how social media has influence people even in the field of politics. Furthemore, he also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of social media in politics in his article, Social Media: Enemy of the State or Power to the People?
[1] The article, Social Media: Enemy of the State or Power to the People?, was written by Pierre Omidyar of the Hufftingtonpost.com.
[2] This article was written to inform not only the Internet citizens but also everyone who are active members of the society.
[3] The text of the article focuses on how the social media is used in politics, and how it is beneficial for citizens. Omidyar also tackled some examples of countries wherein the use of social media in politics is being practice and vis-a-vis. In addition, he stated that social media is a tool of “liberation” and “empowerment” since it does not only allow a person to express himself but also to voice out his thoughts on political matters. Moreover, it provides mutual understanding between the citizens and the government (Omidyar, 2014).
[4] However, I believe that the text itself is the sub-text of the article, the author was pretty direct in stating how social media is beneficial to its people and how its disadvantage is up to the person, if he is going to take it for granted or make use of it (Omidyar, 2014).
[5] Through the years, technology made lives effortless by inventing and innovating ways for everything to be possible in the fastest and easiest way. Social media is not only a tool of communication but also a tool to connect people and ideas, which is why it is also in the field of politics. Social media, however, can also be a tool of oppression since the government can control it.
[6] I believe that logical fallacy used in the article was testimonial since Omidyar is the chairman of eBay and CEO of First Look Media, it can be said that he is an expert in the field of social media. The rhetorical appeal committed in the article was Ethos since it provided events, valid information, and he made of his credential as a writer and, probably, an expert in the said field.
[7] The positive message presented was how the use of social media is prevalent and beneficial in politics. Social media encourages more participation, awareness, and exchanging ideas on political matters. Moreover, taking this kind of freedom for granted may affect the people or the government. Meanwhile, the negative message of the article tells us that social media can cause oppression through controlling the message being delivered.
[8] This article empowers everyone who wants to engage in politics but is not capable to do so since voicing out their opinions to the government is difficult. Today, social media enables everyone to use mobile applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and the like to express their opinions and ideas freely. This article may disempower those who are still traditional since they think that the use of social media is invalid and may be biased. [9] The article could have been better if Internet citizens were also ask on how social media helps in politics. To gain more information, I think it will be better to hear from the writer, himself, and asked how he gained such insights if he did not even interview one citizen.
[10] As I read the article, I immediately agreed on how social media today provides more information to the citizens. I find this article very compelling since it illustrates how social media even in the field of politics drives people.
